How the Qibla compass works
- Compass view and guide view: use whichever is easier to read.
- Vibration when you turn to face the Qibla, so you can pray without watching the screen.
- Calibration warning when your phone's sensor is unreliable, so you do not pray in the wrong direction.
- Distance to the Kaaba from where you are.
The direction is calculated from your location and works without internet.
Tips for a good reading
- Hold the phone flat and away from magnets, cases with magnetic clasps and large metal objects.
- If the app asks you to calibrate, move the phone in a figure of eight.
- Allow location once so the direction is worked out for where you are.
Your privacy
The compass sensor is read only while the Qibla screen is open. Your location is used to work out the direction and distance, and is not sent anywhere.
Common questions
Does the Qibla compass work offline?
Yes. The direction and distance are calculated on your phone, so no internet is needed.
Why does the compass ask me to calibrate?
Phone compass sensors drift near metal and magnets. The app warns you when the reading is unreliable, and moving the phone in a figure of eight usually fixes it.
